The situation

You have two minutes at pick-up, or a scheduled 個人面談 (kojin mendan, individual meeting). Teachers are used to speaking slowly, but they will not start in English.

In this lesson

  • Greet a teacher and introduce yourself as a parent
  • Ask how your child is doing in class
  • Say that your Japanese is limited and ask for slower speech
  • Request a longer meeting or an interpreter

Takeaway

Opening with いつもお世話になっております and saying plainly that your Japanese is limited will carry you through most school conversations.
